Romania is trapped between two painful solutions to the current government crisis: 1. rescue democracy in the short run and assemble a coalition that bars the radical AUR party from coming to power; but risk that it will thrive in opposition and win big in the 2028 elections as people will have additional reasons to feel politics is not a democratic game, but played behind closed doors; 2. allow AUR and the establishment PSD (Social-Democrats) to form a government majority to test their limits and allow voters to assess delivery against their incompetence (AUR) and corruption (PSD), as well as expose the opportunism of an alliance between a so-called anti-establishment party and the main establishment party in Romania; but risk that institutional capture and a Russia & MAGA-aligned agenda may throw the country off course badly for years to come.
