After a rejuvenating week following a remarkable August in Salbek, I’m excited to reflect on the incredible work our family and volunteers have accomplished. One of our greatest achievements over the past four years is witnessing the transformation of the rural regeneration project from a vision of Asociatia Castel Salbek to a true community initiative.

UNESCO highlights rural regeneration as a multifaceted process that intertwines sustainable development, cultural heritage, and research.

• UNESCO emphasizes the importance of preserving cultural heritage to strengthen local identity and pride. This year marked a significant shift as our village community actively participated in restoration projects, hard work on the day to day restoration work, beautifying the tent and castle with flowers, showcasing local products, and engaging with students from USV Cluj on sustainable development strategies. My heartfelt thanks go to BCR and East Grain for their invaluable support in making this happen.

By celebrating traditional practices, local crafts, and languages, Salbek is poised to attract tourism and enhance economic viability, not to mention the Sculpture park which is more and more an attraction by itself.
The strong community involvement adds tremendous educational value to our International Opeta Master Class, which recently concluded its fourth edition. Our efforts have fostered community participation, social cohesion, and collective action.
Our cultural initiatives include educational components that raise awareness of local history and traditions, facilitating intergenerational knowledge transfer.

This year’s activities have once again demonstrated that integrating cultural heritage with research-driven approaches can drive sustainable development, bolster local economies, and promote social well-being. Additionally, we are proud to have locals from Salbek participate in the initiative for Visit Timiș to secure the title of Gastronomic European Capital for Banat 2028 and Asociatia Castel Salbek has been accepted in the Europa Nostra network.
While much has been accomplished, I remain optimistic about the future as we strengthen the connections between research, economic growth, and cultural activities, with impact for all stakeholders.
