In 2019, I published an interview in Piața Financiară where I described the global economic order as a marriage between two superpowers — one of crickets, one of ants.
I did not imagine that seven years later, a Substack post using a similar structural logic would send the Dow down 800 points in a single session.
That post introduced the concept of Ghost GDP: an economy where AI produces, optimizes, and allocates — but where income no longer flows into human wallets.
Every economic system we have ever built assumed one thing: the economy exists to serve human wellbeing. Artificial intelligence challenges that assumption at its foundation.
The markets reacted to a scenario explicitly labeled as fiction. That reaction is itself a signal worth taking seriously.
In the attached essay, I examine what happens if productivity continues but the human economic role diminishes — and whether this inflection point is a threat or an opportunity.
The conclusion I reach is not a prediction. It is a design challenge.
