The world has changed fundamentally and it is all about electrification.
Today technology allows us to generate affordable electricity from wind and sun across an entire continent. We can store it when and where it’s needed. We can move it through interconnected grids and manage demand in real-time with AI. Consumers empowered to generate their own electricity—becoming producers, trading energy, part of the system’s solution.Technology has rewired the economics of energy security.
Yet many national energy policies remain trapped in the last century—fragmented, inward-focused, playing defense. The result: Europe is economically weaker and geopolitically more vulnerable than it needs to be.
The evidence is clear: Countries that committed to electrification, renewables, network digitalization, grid interconnection, and integrated markets have built genuine resilience. They absorb energy shocks. Their economies outperform due to better prices. They have strategic options.
Countries clinging to national sovereignty in energy, propping up markets with helicopter subsidies and untargeted price caps, recycling projects from decades past, falling behind. Quick fixes don’t build security. They defer it.
The structural answer is collective European energy sovereignty built on electrification:
-Renewables and storage distributed across the continent, not concentrated in geopolitical dependencies
-Grids that truly connect East and West, South and North
-Integrated markets where prices reflect reality and signal where investment is needed
-Electricity infrastructure scaled and flexible to power
-Boosting AI, Innovation and digital transformation for prices that keep Europe competitive
-Governance that attracts private capital instead of crowding it out
-Policies that protect the vulnerable and support value-added industries and are transparent to taxpayers
This isn’t ideology. It’s architecture. And architecture matters. It’s not binary, it can all be achieved with proper care and structure.
The game has changed. Defending outdated national energy models isn’t strength. It’s fragility dressed as sovereignty.
Accelerate market integration. Reform pricing mechanisms. Unlock investment. Build a continent that generates its own energy, trades it intelligently, and becomes structurally harder to coerce.
Energy security is European security. Time to play a different game.
