The digital public square is louder than ever, but how do we make sense of the noise? The Opinion COST Action – CA21129 has just released “The Opinion Manifesto”, a vital framework for understanding mediatized communication and public opinion formation in today’s platform-driven ecosystem. Two sections in particular highlight the shifting paradigm of public discourse:
– Not All Opinions Weigh the Same. In an era of information overload, context, expertise, and intent (still) matter. The Manifesto provides a necessary lens for distinguishing between well-founded arguments, algorithmic amplification, and bad-faith rhetoric.
– AI is a Transformative Force in the Study and Expression of Opinions. Artificial Intelligence is playing a dual role. It is our most powerful tool for analyzing massive datasets of public sentiment (NLP and computational methods), yet it is also an active participant, generating, shaping, and sometimes distorting the opinions we consume daily.
If you work in communication, data science, or public policy, this is a must-read. It sets a new research agenda for how we study and interact with digital opinions.
