💡 By implying that “we will be clear with our European allies that their efforts and resources are best focused on Europe”, the Pentagon suggests that it is not expected that European allies will play a role in deterring China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific. This marks a shift from the ongoing efforts made under the Biden administration, when China was first recognized as an emerging challenge for the Euro-Atlantic security environment, as included in NATO’s Strategic Concept from 2022. The idea that Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific theaters are connected, one that was introduced in the NATO strategic vocabulary under Biden, is not one that the Trump administration supports. The message is simple: the US will focus on China alone, while Russia needs to be kept in check by the Europeans themselves.
